Preventive Measures to Combat Online Gambling in Fintech Ecosystem

Published: Juli 14, 2024

Online gambling, or “judi online,” has become a significant issue in Indonesia. According to the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Budi Arie Setiadi, around 2.7 million Indonesians are currently involved in online gambling, with the majority being young people. Of these, approximately 2.1 million are engaging in small-stakes betting (below Rp 100,000), primarily from low-income backgrounds. This group includes students, workers, farmers, homemakers, and private employees.

As the Chairman of the Indonesian Fintech Association (Aftech), I emphasize the critical importance of implementing preventive measures to combat online gambling within the fintech ecosystem. Aftech is fully committed to supporting government initiatives to eliminate illegal online gambling activities. We reject any involvement in these practices and aim to foster a safe, healthy, and sustainable fintech industry.

Supporting Government Efforts

Aftech fully supports government initiatives to eliminate illegal online gambling. We firmly reject any involvement in such practices and are committed to fostering a safe, healthy, and sustainable fintech industry.

Strengthening Governance and Compliance

Our strategies include enhancing governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC). By implementing these measures, we ensure that fintech companies adhere to the highest operational standards, minimizing the risk of facilitating illegal activities. We also prioritize fintech education and literacy to ensure proper use of fintech products and services.

Utilizing AI for KYC Processes

A significant step we have taken is utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in know your customer (KYC) processes. This technology helps us identify potential loan recipients who may be involved in online gambling transactions, thereby preventing such activities from infiltrating the fintech sector.

Blocking Suspicious Accounts

I urge all Aftech members to block accounts suspected of being used for illegal activities, including online gambling, following guidelines from the Financial Services Authority (OJK). By enhancing our know your business (KYB) procedures and implementing robust fraud detection systems (FDS), we can ensure the security and integrity of digital payment systems.

Promoting Digital Financial Literacy

Through our #GenerasiHebatAntiJudol campaign, we invite industry players, stakeholders, and the community to collectively enhance digital financial literacy. It is crucial that innovation in the financial sector brings positive impacts for the future of Indonesia’s young generation.

Together, we can create a secure and thriving fintech ecosystem, safeguarding it against the risks posed by online gambling. This concerted effort will ensure a better and safer digital financial landscape for all Indonesians.
